Funny thing about wild magic is that it's not actually as common as you'd think it is. You literally have to roll a 1 out of a 20. So like yeah it's playing with fire but a small fire for the most part. A few players I've known make it a 5 out of 20 or every odd number where the chances are much much more worse.
